The Wash U Bears are off to a strong start!

Led by the two brick walls for Goalies Sophmore Zach  Goodman (6 saves) and Josh  Weinstein (4 saves),  the defensive cast of characters (and reigning WULAX dodgeball champions) the Dynamic Drabinski Duo, transfer Junior Pat Geelan, Junior Stefan Pajaro-Van-De-Stadt returning from Madrid, Junior Wayne Chang, Sophomore Willie Debutts, the aggressive/unrelenting Junior Andrew Sperry and Senior  Brett Goldberg had an answer for everything the Griffins threw at them.

On the offensive side of the ball, Wash U came firing right from the gate. On the first play Sophmore Middie Will Baizer (3g) took a solid pass from Senior Ben Glassman (3G, 1A) and stuck it in the top corner, setting the tone early in the game.    After a bit of a dogfight, the Griffins would see themselves with a 3-2 lead, however, things would turn around quickly as the Bears lit up the scoreboard in the second quarter.

Like clockwork the Wash U offense, led by Junior Jeremy Fridling (3g), Glassman, Senior Steve Evans, who recorded a nifty assist, and Senior Danny Steinberg (2 gb) picked apart the Fontbonne defense. They did this along side Junior Jack Barrow (2g 1a) who had several opportunities denied by the Fontbonne goalie, who was the only reason the score wasn’t more lopsided. Attackman Bryan Thompson, and Michael  Siu (1g 1a) also made big contributions on offense.

To top it all off WULAX won 15-22 faceoffs thanks to Glassman and the Kyle Kotecki and the Bears’ Defense was successful getting the ball to the offense only losing 3 clears. There were also strong debuts from Freshman Dan Drabinksi, Freshman Sam Hom (2a), Sperry, Freshman Matt Yen, Geelan, and Freshman Elias Feldman.

At the end of the game, the Bears shined through the freezing rain winning 11-7.

Next up: the Bears hit the road to North Carolina to open up MCLA play vs. UNC-Charlotte and Appalachian State. The Charlotte 49ers are 1-1 having after knocking off The Citadel and dropping one vs. the College of Charleston Cougars. The Appalachian State Mountaineers finished their 2013 campaign with a 3-6 record, they have not opened up 2014 play.
